Expectant parents, children and their parents or caregivers are welcome in this class where participants begin developing a lifelong love of music. Together children and parents chant, sing, dance and play simple pitch and rhythm instruments. Families in Tune is designed to involve children in playful experiences and to expose them to many types of music

music4Let's Put on a Show! (12 weeks) Ages 8-15

Instructor: Amy Roberts Crawford & 3 Saturdays, 9-noon
Fee: $225
We will learn and perform a short children's musical - Disney's The Jungle Book. All students will be included in all choral numbers. Students will be selected for small speaking roles and/or solo singing part. The musical will be a child-focused small-scale production. Class time will be used to learn music, explore simple movement, and create sets and props. We will tour preschools & elementary schools with the production and will perform at Artspace for families and friends. We will have 3 Saturday workshops to make props and costumes - dates to be determined.

music3String Orchestras (16 wks) All Ages
Begins Sept. 21 Sundays, 4-5:30 or 6-7:30 p.m.
Conductor: Anna Wetherby
Fee: $160 and $100 for second family member
Make music together. All string players - violin, viola, cello and bass - are welcome. There will be 2 orchestras - each based on skill level. Auditions for ensemble placement are Sunday Sept. 14 at 4 p.m. at Artspace. Call to reserve a time and to get details on audition. String Orchestra members will perform on recitals, student serenades and in local schools and senior centers.

Guitar Day with Brooks Williams Teens & Adults

Calling all guitarists! Blues, rock, bluegrass, jazz, folk... Guitar Day is a daylong guitar workshop that features technique building sessions (fingerpicking, flatpicking, chord wizardry, and blues moves) as well as a duos & trios session where attendees collaborate on a piece of music together. This is a hand-on workshop with lots of playing and jamming!

All levels are welcome but this workshop is best suited for players who are familiar with all the basic first position chords and have some ability playing single notes with either a flatpick or their fingers.

Free Song Session with Brooks Williams   All Abilities
Sunday, October 5, 2008 4-6 pm
Come for an afternoon of picking and singing. Bring your guitar, fiddle, banjo, ukulele, mandolin, bass, voice, and songs. Sing, strum, fingerpick, jam, harmonize, take a lead - all levels are invited. Chord charts and lyrics will be provided. Players and singers of all abilities are welcome. Bring friends and family. Refreshments will be provided.

CHAMBER MUSIC WEEKEND INTENSIVE All Ages
Saturday, January 24, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Sunday, January 25, 1- 5 p.m. (includes performance)
Fee: $50 and $25 for siblings
The weekend is open to students of all ages and abilities, and all instruments are welcome. Participants will play in small groups (quartets, trios, etc.), a chamber orchestra and a larger ensemble. Players will be matched and grouped by experience. Beginning students need to have 6 months of private instruction or 1 year of group lessons. All ensembles will be coached or conducted by an Artspace music faculty member. Participants will meet at Artspace on Saturday from 10-4, and on Sunday, Second Congregational Church in Greenfield from 1 - 3:30. There will be a concert/recital at 4 p.m. on Sunday with a reception to follow. The concert/recital is open to the public and there is no admission.

Begins Sept. 15 Mondays, 4 p.m. or
Instructor: Rachel Roberts Wednesdays, 10 a.m.
Fee: $130
Explore different materials and techniques as you make art together in drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, and sculpture. Learn the basic elements of line, shape, and color. Use natural and found objects to make colorful prints using Styrofoam scratchboards. Take rubbings and make prints from textured surfaces. Learn basic pinch, coil, and slab construction methods in clay to form 3D assembled pieces. Class time includes art games or a brief story time, and viewing prints of artwork by various 20th century artists. Dress to get messy.

Learn the basic skills of drawing as we focus on line, shape and form. In class we will work on drawing exercises, and every week students will be able to take home a completed drawing. This is a very structured and rewarding class designed to give students the foundation needed to be able to draw well. No art experience is necessary, only a desire to learn to draw!

Kids Clay (16 wks)
Ages 6-10

Wednesdays. 4-5:30 p.m.

Fee: $250
Everyone loves the feeling of sinking his or her fingers into clay! Kids will make pots, textured tiles, and sculptures using slab, pinch and coil techniques, Students can also try the potter's wheel. Students will finish projects by adding surface decorations, and under glaze colors before clay is fired. You can use the finished pots for serving food! It is very satisfying to use what one has made in class. Come explore real clay!

Knitting Together
Child/Parent Class (6 wks) All Ages

This class is for parents and their children who want to lean to knit together. You will learn basic knitting stitches and be able to knit a hat or scarf. Bring a tote to class for your supplies.

Art from Many Cultures (12 wks) Ages 6-8
Begins Sept. 16 Tuesdays, 4-5:30
Instructor: Rachel Roberts
Fee: $190
Explore ancient and contemporary world cultures through their arts and crafts. Different materials and techniques will be used together in printmaking, papermaking, textiles, mosaics, weaving, and pottery to create representational 2D and 3D artwork. Projects will focus on African, Asian, Caribbean, Central American, Indonesian, Mediterranean, and Native North American cultures. Class time will include a brief story time and viewing cultural artwork. Dress to get messy.

Kids Who Knit (6 wks) Ages 7-12
Begins Oct. 2 Thursdays, 4-5:30 p.m.
Homeschoolers Class (all ages) Thursdays, 10-11:30 a.m.

This class focuses on knitting as a therapeutic exercise. Knitting is calming. Children will learn at their own pace and with their own learning style in a stress free environment. After a long day at school, this is a great class to help students relax while learning a new skill. Bring a tote to class for your supplies.

Dynamic Drawing (16 wks) Ages 7-8
Begins Sept. 18 Thursdays 4:00-5:00

This is a very structured class designed to lay a strong foundation in basic drawing skills. We will focus on accurately drawing what we see using line, shading, and texture. We will work with pencils, charcoal, erasers, colored pencils, and even some watercolors! Come have fun and learn to draw well!

Learning from the Masters (16 wks) Ages 9-12
Begins Sept. 16 Tuesdays 4:00-5:30

This class is designed with a mixture of art history and hands on art making. One of the best ways to learn the skills involved in art is by studying Master Artists, such as Michelangelo, Monet, Matisse, and more.Through copying great works of art, the students will eventually be able to translate some of the same "Master" principles into their own artwork. We will work with drawing, painting, and collage.

Mixed Media Art Based on Drawings (12 wks) Age 9-12
Begins Sept. 17 Wednesdays, 4-5:30 p.m.

If you love to draw this class is for you. We will acquire and practice new drawing skills and transform them into other kinds of art. As an example, we will create contour drawings then transfer them onto printing plates and make prints using ink and rollers. Other projects include line drawings that become wire sculptures and realistic still lifes that turn into oil pastel abstractions. The possibilities are endless!

Teen Knitting Club (6 wks) Ages 13-18
Begins Oct. 3 Fridays, 6 to 8 p.m.

This group is for all skill levels of knitting. Make new friends while knitting. Bring a tote for your supplies.

Teen Clay (16 wks) Ages: 13-17

Instructor: Rhonda Wainshilbaum Fee: $250
Students will learn hand building and wheel throwing techniques while making functional and sculptural pieces. Form versus function will be discussed. Students will be encouraged to bring sketches of projects they would like to make. Class will be structured by individual interests. We will discuss how surface decoration and glazing should compliment the shape of the piece. Finished work may be used and will be treasured.

Adult Drawing (16 wks) Thursdays, 10-noon

Drawing is an essential skill for anyone interested in art making of any kind. This is a great class for beginners and experienced alike who desire to strengthen their observation and drawing skills. We will focus on accurately rendering what we see by using basic line, shape, and shadow in order to create the illusion of depth and three-dimensional space. We will be working with pencils, charcoal, and erasers.

Portfolio Development (4 wks) Teens & Adults
Begins Oct. 8 Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

This class is for anyone planning to apply to a college art school or other program that requires a visual arts portfolio for acceptance. High School students in their junior or senior year will find this course very useful, as will adults going back to school and current students changing majors. The course will begin with critiques of existing work in the student's portfolio to identify additional work needed. We will also discuss what art schools are looking for in student portfolios and the varying importance the portfolio is given in the whole application package. The remainder of the class will be spent creating work that will be beneficial to the student's application. This course will require a large measure of self-motivation and will include both one-on-one instruction and group critiques.

Acrylic Painting for Teens and Adults (6 wks) Thursdays, 7-9 p.m.

Learn how incredibly versatile and satisfying painting with artist's acrylics can be. This wonderful media can be pushed, pulled, poured, thick, thin, opaque or transparent, in infinitely layered glazes or single slabs. Although we will be concentrating on observation and realism, self-expression and experimentation will be encouraged. Some drawing skills and a willingness to make and share messy mistakes required. This course is designed for beginning or advanced students.

Moku Hanga: Japanese Woodblock Printing (6 wks) Teens & Adults
Begins Oct. 6 -
Will also be offered in Mar. Mondays, 7-9 p.m.
Instructor: Jeanie Schermesser
Fee: $160 each session
Moku Hanga is the Japanese term for woodblock print (moku means wood and hanga means print). Japanese woodblock prints are known especially for their intense use of color and for the fact that the pigments are water-based rather than oil-based. Students will create and carve a design that will be printed in 3 colors- 1 block for each color, all registered by "kento marks" to print over top of one another for the finished design. We will print a small edition using traditional tools and materials.

Open Figure Drawing Session Adults
No Instruction- All Skill Levels Sundays, 9:30-12:30 p.m.

Bring your own materials/supplies.
The figure drawing group is looking for a few new members. 12 - 15 people meet once or twice a month to draw or paint using a live model for inspiration. Each session begins with a series of quick one or two minute poses designed to capture the gesture of the model. As the morning progresses, longer poses lead to more detailed studies. The last hour is devoted to a single composition for an in-depth study of the nude. Participants will need to bring drawing materials. Some easels and drawing boards are available at Artspace. Watercolor for Adults (16 wks) Wednesdays, 10-noon

This class is designed for those who are truly interested in learning to paint. Students will explore watercolor as an integrative process involving aspects of drawing, design, and color. Some of the painting projects will include color theory, still life and landscape, as well as, opportunities for personal creativity.

Sumi-e Painting: Japanese Brush Painting with Jeanie Schermesser

Fee: $90 each day, mat. incl.
Try your hand at mastering brush and ink. You'll soon be creating expressive and visually dynamic paintings with only a few simple strokes! We will start with a series of painting exercises to teach you how to hold, load, and control your brush. Soon you will be painting plum blossoms, bamboo, orchid, and chrysanthemum that represent the four seasons in Japan. We will also do some nature painting.

Saturday Nov. 8, 9-noon & Sunday Nov. 9, 1-3 p.m. Ages: 9-12
Animal Block Prints with Karen Gaudette

Fee: $55
Students will look at the Ray Gengenbach animal block prints on display at Artspace in addition to looking at animal art throughout history and the world. Students will create preliminary drawings that will be transferred onto EZ cut linoleum blocks. On Saturday, students will be taught how to safely handle block-carving tools as they carve the surface of their linoleum to create stamps. On Sunday, students will have the chance to complete any last minute carving before we begin the process of printing. Students will have access to various colors of ink and will be given the chance to print a number of copies in various colors.

November 15, 9-noon Ages 7-11
Hittin' the Road: Design & Build a Funky Vehicle with Sara Acton

Fee: $30
Looking at the vibrant paintings and wild decoration of Pakistan's mountain trucks, students will be inspired to create an imaginative 3-dimensional vehicle of their own design. Bring a shoebox (or other small-sized box) and some creative energy to get started!

Jan. 10, 9-noon Ages 7-10
Chinese Brush Painting & Perspective with Sara Acton

Fee: $30
Come learn new skills and techniques to create a Chinese-style landscape painting. Enjoy a morning [or afternoon] of working with watercolor and experimenting with basic Chinese brush strokes. Students will also discuss techniques for creating the illusion of distance, or perspective, in their artwork.
